Regarding configuring the preview portlet to show draft content, on the authoring server this is just setting the preview option to 'Allow authors to preview content dynamically in a Web Content portal page' which uses the WCM Site Area mapping in Portal pages to figure out where draft content should be previewed within the greater portal site. This setting is normally enabled by default.
